Heavily modify foreigner registration card.

The Korean government has made significant changes to the design of the Alien Registration Card issued to overseas Koreans living in Korea. This change aims to make it easier to verify one’s identity.

Starting last month, the Ministry of Justice has transitioned from black and white to color photos on the Alien Registration Card for long-term foreign residents. The size of the photos has also been enlarged. These changes are implemented to facilitate easier identification.

Other changes to the design include moving the photo from the left side to the right side and removing the gender indicator. Gender can now be identified by the seventh digit of the registration number. If the seventh digit is 5 or 7, it is male, and if it is 6 or 8, it is female.

Additionally, a QR code has been included on the new Alien Registration Card to allow for easy verification of personal information such as name, gender, nationality and region, residency status, and issuance date.

Existing cards will remain valid until reissuance is necessary. To obtain a new card, the old card must be returned, and a fee of 30,000 won (approximately 30 dollars) must be paid.

For ethnically Korean individuals living long-term in Korea, there are three types of Alien Registration Cards that are issued: the Residence Card for foreigners staying in Korea for more than 90 days after entry, the Permanent Resident Card for foreigners with permanent residence status, and the Overseas Korean Resident Card for ethnically Korean individuals who have declared residency in Korea.

The ‘Alien Registration Card’ is issued to foreigners who plan to stay in Korea for more than 90 days after entry, while the Permanent Resident Card is issued to foreigners with permanent residence status and is valid for 10 years. The Overseas Korean Resident Card is issued to ethnically Korean individuals who have declared residency in Korea.
